SHIRLEY YA Knowledge Sharing: Computer Printing Paper(Ⅳ) - Explanation on the Weight of Computer Printing Paper

In the previous articles, we talked about the preliminary work of computer printing paper, from how to produce it to the working principle of its color development. Next, let's talk about the functional knowledge of computer printing paper.

Today, let's first understand the weight of computer printing paper.

Understanding Paper Weight and Misconception

When purchasing paper, we will see how many grams are written on the outer packaging. At first glance, we may think it is the weight of the paper, but it is not. Whether it is computer printed paper or other paper, the number of grams written represents the weight of one square meter of paper, not the weight of the paper. Just like the 241 specification and 381 specification we bought, they have the same weight written on them. However, it is obvious that one of these two papers is larger and the other is smaller, so the weight of the paper does not represent the weight of the paper, but rather the weight of one square meter of paper.

Carbonless Copy Paper: The Base Material for Printing Paper

We previously mentioned that the base paper for computer printing paper is carbonless copy paper, so the weight of computer printing paper is closely related to the weight of carbonless paper. Carbonless copy paper is divided into upper paper, middle paper, and lower paper. The upper paper, also known as reverse coated paper, is coated with microcapsules containing force sensitive dye oil on its reverse side; Middle paper, also known as front and back double coated paper, has a color developer coated on the front and strong sensitive dye oil microcapsules coated on the back. Bottom paper, also known as surface coated paper, is only coated with color developer.

How Carbonless Copy Paper Creates Vivid Images

There are two types of coatings in carbonless copy paper: a CF layer containing a developer and a CB layer containing a colorant. Hair dye is a special type of colorless dye that has been dissolved in non-volatile medium oil and encapsulated in 3-7 μ m microcapsules. The impact pressure of force writing and printing can crush microcapsules, causing colorless dye solution to flow out and come into contact with the developer, resulting in chemical changes and presenting a vivid image, thus achieving the purpose of replication.

Classifications and Variations of Carbonless Copy Paper

Carbonless paper can be divided into CB: 45g/㎡, 48g/㎡, 50g/㎡, 52g/㎡, 55g/㎡ according to the quantitative classification; CFB: 48g/㎡, 50g/㎡, 52g/㎡; CF: 44g/㎡, 47g/㎡, 77g/㎡. According to the colors of the paper, they are red, yellow, green, blue, and white; The colors presented are blue, yellow, orange, black, red, etc.

Specifications of Roll and Flat Paper for Printing

Carbonless copy paper can be divided into roll paper and flat paper according to specifications and models. The size of roll paper can range from 160mm to 1940mm, and the size of flat paper can range from 420mm * 530mm to 1420mm * 1420mm. The computer printing paper we use now is flat paper obtained by cutting roll paper in factories.
